We routinely hear from art pottery collectors about their negative experiences with online pottery purchases.  The following are five simple steps you can take to help ensure positive online pottery buying experience.

1.  Buy from a member of the American Art Pottery Association.  All American Art Pottery Association members are required to abide by the association’s code of ethics, which requires pottery dealers to truthfully represent the condition and authenicity of the art pottery items they are selling as well as offer a money back guarantee for any reason.

2.  Ask specific questions about the item before purchasing. A few questions to confirm the condition and history of an item will often provide important insight into the seller’s ability to accurately describe pottery condition issues such as damage or restoration.

3.  If buying off eBay check the seller’s feedback and specifically review any negative comments. More than a couple of negative comments for condition related issues should serve as a warning that you may want to purchase elsewhere.

4.   Only buy from pottery dealers that offer a money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase. If a seller isn’t willing to allow a return for any condition or quality issue shop elsewhere.

5.  If your not familar with the pottery dealer, use a credit card for payment of your purchase. If you use a credit card for your purchase, even through paypal, you can contest the charge in the event your vase is misrepresented and you are unable to resolve the issue with the seller.
