Rookwood Pottery Artists Continued

We had have a couple of questions about other Rookwood pottery decorators listed in Anita Ellis’ Rookwood Pottery – The Glaze Lines reference book so I thought I would provide the list for "B" level Rookwood artists.  "B" level Rookwood decorators usually have good collector interest. Ellis ranks the following Rookwood pottery artists as "B" level. Pict4447

  • Lenore Asbury
  • Fannie Auckland
  • Constance Baker
  • Elizabeth Barrett
  • Arthur Conant
  • Sallie Coyne
  • Edward Diers
  • Lorinda Epply
  • Laura Fry
  • William Hentschel
  • Katherine Hickman
  • Bruce Horsfall
  • Edward Hurley
  • Jens Jensen
  • Sturgis Laurence
  • Elizabeth Lincoln
  • William McDonald
  • Mary Nourse
  • Olga Geneva Reed
  • Fred Rothenbusch
  • Amelia Sprague
  • Charles Todd
  • Sallie Toohey
  • John Wareham

Overall I believe Ms. Ellis’ rankings provide a relatively accurate representation of current collector interest and popularity of various Rookwood pottery decorators.  However, I would add that from the "B" list the following decorators could be considered at or very near the "A" level:Pict2055

  • Arthur Conant
  • William Hentschel
  • Bruce Horsfall
  • Jens Jensen
  • Sturgis Laurence
  • Elizabeth Lincoln
  • Olga Geneva Reed
  • Fred Rothenbusch
  • Charles Todd

Next time we will look at "C" level Rookwood pottery decorators.

  • Please help! I am certain I have an unusual and valuable Rookwood vase by Mary Nourse. Painted with raised daffodils, it is a different shape than anything else I have seen in Rookwood. Please help me find out where and how to value it. Thanks.

    Sincerely,

    Tom

  • Hello,

We have a 1902 artist signed ewer with the etched letters HS

Could this be Helen Smith? Do you have any information on this artis?

    Thanks so much.

  • Andy and Jane,

I would really need to see a photo to be sure. I don’t have any information on Helen Smith. Harriette Strafer and Helen Stuntz worked at Rookwood in the 1890s but records indicate both were no longer at Rookwood in 1902.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • I’m appraising a piece of Rookwood that has the initials c.y. with an elongated tail on the y and the periods after the letters are very pronounced, anyone familiar with the artist that might have used this cipher?

  • Tina,

I would have to see a picture to confirm the Rookwood artist. Is it possible that the letters are GY for Grace Young or possibly CN for Clara Newton? If you could send us a photo we could probably identify the artist’s signature.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • Hi, I just got a vase that I could swear is Rookwood but it is mounted on a metal base and it is not possible to come off the way it is done, the metal makers mark shows inside bottom and there is a signature inside the mouth, looks like M.C or H.C.. I can send photos. Thanks, Tom

  • I have a rookwood vase, 1930, #6094 in a matte rose glaze. I have found the same vase on the internet in yellow, but mine has a series of 5 little comma or apostrophe looking marks in a “U” shape under the vase number. Is that a stamp indicating a particular artist? Thanks

  • i have a large jardiniere, matte glaze, imprinted and easily read is ROOKWOOD 1883 on the bottom,i think the piece is 17 inches in diameter. i can’t read the imprints on the bottom. there may a “w” or an “m”.

  • Hello, Is there any publication that shows the marks of the various Rookwood artists. In other words, how can I identify the artist of any particular piece by markings?
    Thanks

  • I have acquired a green glazed Rookwood canister or jar with 340Z and the initials AM. There is a copper embellished lid. I have been unable to find anything like it. Can you help?
