Fans of the eclectic – and sometimes mysterious – George Ohr are making plans to hit the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast for the Ninth Annual George Ohr Gala. The event is hosted this year by the breathtaking and recently rebuilt Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi, Miss. As many of you know, when Hurricane Katrina made landfall in August, 2005, it annihilated both the Beau Rivage and the considerable work that had already been completed to the new George Ohr museum. Since then, almost superhuman efforts have been made to get both restored to their original beauty. It’s been a fascinating journey and an impressive and newly produced video will chronicle the years of the Ohr Museum and the Mad Potter himself, George Ohr.
This year’s theme is “Through the Potter’s Wheel” and pulls from the “Alice in Wonderland” story, which, of course, is where Ohr’s self-proclaimed Mad Potter label is derived from. Guests will enjoy a four course dinner and a hosted bar. In recent years, ticket prices were $200; this year, however, they have been reduced to $150.
Guests will also enjoy many of the George Ohr pottery pieces as well as personal appearances by Bob Kipperman, jeweler to the stars and whose Swarovski crystals are worn by Madonna and Claudia Schiffer. There will be silent auctions, including art pottery and other artworks, trips to Paris, Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe and Washington, D.C.
It promises to be a festive event and if possible, you should try to attend. It’s slated for November 4 and all monies will go for the operating expenses of the museum, which will officially open its doors, after several delays, including Hurricane Katrina, on Monday, November 8th. If you can’t make the gala, the museum will host an open house on Saturday, November 6th. Tickets will be available at the door, but advance purchases are recommended.
You can also learn more about George Ohr pottery and the new museum by visiting
GeorgeOhr.org. And for what it’s worth, the golden Gulf Coast is splendid this time of year. The weather is just beginning to show signs of crisp autumn breezes, but it’s still warm enough to enjoy the beautiful beaches and night life. If you do attend, be sure to drop us a line at Just Art Pottery and let us know how it went!
There will be Clark House Pottery in the silent auction at the Ninth Annual George Ohr GALA. Many thanks!
We are hoping to see many of the George Ohr descendants at the GALA this year as well. They are really a great and warm group of people who have been kind enough to adopt Pam and I into the fold. They overwhelmed us last yaer by buying 50 of our pieces at the First George Ohr Family Reunion.
